Break

Earlier in the week I went on a mad rant to all that would listen about how dumb people can be. It was brought about by a letter in The Press about the idiocy of people who took their children to the beach when there was a tsunami warning in place.

Words cannot describe the stupidity.

This image is of the dry docks being inundated at Lyttelton in May 1960 when the Chilean Earthquake caused a 2.7m wave in the harbour. That same earthquake created 4.5m wave in Napier.

For those of us who partake in Civil Defence training, and in a disaster, will go to work to help others, I can’t help but feel mad at people who put their lives, and the lives of their children at risk. Read more →

9am, Saturday Morning

Yesterday morning, at some ungodly hour, Sarah contacted me and asked if I wanted to climb the Bridle Path with her. In my delirious, somewhat half asleep state I agreed.

So at an hour that most people I know would still be sleeping, I found myself climbing up one very steep hill.

This is the view from a bit over half way up, looking down on the Heathcote Valley.

On the way down I slipped on the shingle path and made a mess of my left leg. It was quite bloody and gross, but Sarah’s mother cleaned it up for me.

This is it much later in the night, after the bloody and redness was gone.

After David and I had dinner on the verandah last night, Chloe came round to go star gazing. We got talking about the Bridle Path and I went on a google search to find images of the steep path.

I ended up coming across this website http://canterburyheritage.blogspot.com/ which has some crazy and very cool old images of Christchurch.

This was the first one I found. I think its really awesome. On the way to our walk we missed the turn off and ended up driving through the tunnel and having to turn back.
There was a lot of discussion on how well the tunnel had aged considering how used it is and how old it is.

One of the things I love about that image is the depiction of cyclists going through the tunnel. Something we know is quite laughable now (except for that one day a year they allow it.)

Up above the trees

I figure that my writing increases as my general dissatisfaction with life/people/work/whatever increases.

This morning I sat in those seats that face everyone else sitting on the bus. There are three stunningly beautiful girls who ride my bus every morning. The Japanese girl had a haircut this week. She looked quite different, but still really pretty.

These girls always make me feel kind of crap. I know I always look terrible, I don’t brush my hair because I rush and forget, I don’t really wear makeup, and if I do its usually smudged from sleep and the night before. When I don’t wear the frumpy “uniform” I have been given for work, I am barely able to dress myself appropriately for the office. At the same time though, they always make me smile with their impeccable unwrinkled clothes and effortless style. They aren’t over dressed or overly made up. They’re just naturally beautiful, and naturally so at 7:55am.

Tonight I went to see a movie with some people. I loved the film, it was heart achingly good. One of the group said she didn’t feel the pain that the rest of us felt in the final scenes, she didn’t understand how we felt watching it. I don’t usually watch movies and see the expression on the actors face and feel that kind of connection. The final scenes of this particular movie I just sat there, thinking how I had been exactly in the same situation (not the same circumstances though), several times in my life.

I didn’t feel like crying or anything girlie like that. It just hit me in a wave of dull pain, to know exactly a feeling like that.

Go see 500 Days of Summer. Its slightly unconventional.

….and yes, today I refrained from using my digital camera. Be thankful.

Hole in my Soul.

I got home from work pretty tired and resigned myself to the fact I was not going to see Tiddabades tonight at Wunderbar. I do really miss having a car for being able to get odd places without relying on the kindness of others.

I was in my room starting to listen to The Eels “Blinking Lights and other revelations”. Which contains a couple of my favourite Eels songs. Tired, and feeling a little jaded. Aside from the news of Laneway festival in Auckland on Feb 1st. It had been a dull day.

David arrived home and came into my room. He flicked through my book of Edgar Allan Poe works, while perched on the end of my bed. We chatted about our days. I complained about a girl interrupting me in Cathedral square to inform me of World Vegetarian Day three times while I was reading a book on my lunch break.

We heard the back door open, and David called out, He knew it was Eamonn. So of course, Eamonn came and joined us. Eamonn was determined we have a percussion party on my bed and started tapping on objects. David and I unaware what he was instigating carried on with our reading. Then Melinda arrived home too. She settled herself at the foot of the bed. David suggested we perhaps go have a dinner somewhere to celebrate World Vegetarian Day. I agreed, but only if it was acknowledged that the pushy girl I met at lunchtime had no impact on this decision, when clearly it did.

Eamonn started with his percussion again, this time, we all joined in. It somehow ended in the 4 of us chorusing “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”.

This also happened, but at some point before the singing.

We walked to The Square, deciding on arrival that Lotus Heart was quite an expensive dinner option, so it was agreed that Govinda’s would be our destination.

We had massive meals there. It was really quite excellent value for money.

That burger and salad was $7.50. Overall the company of my flatmates was really enjoyable. We had made a lot of jokes along the way some of which had put Melinda and I into hysterics. Almost embarrassing how funny we found some things actually.

During dinner it became apparent that my favourite shoes, The spiderman sneakers purchased prior to
Rhythm and Vines had finally met their end. There were some endless hole and shoe related jokes. We walked to the supermarket, the whole way, I kept commenting how I am determined to find myself another pair of the same shoes.

Here is a picture from our trip to the supermarket:

We took the shuttle home after finding a wallet on the side of the road. There was a lot of discussion as to the best place to take it to find the owner. The first idea was to try and find him in the phone book or on the Internet. Turns out the only Internet result we could find led us to Out Of Kilter. Hah.

I went online right away to also look for where one would acquire a new pair of Spiderman shoes.

(Fran’s sad face)

But anyway, here is something pretty awesome. If you may recall, I’m not actually sure I wrote anything about it here, maybe over at the Log Cabin Blog., Crackhouse and Tommy Ill came to play some shows we put on for them, including in David’s bedroom… well here is Mr. Ill’s new video. Its very cool.
