as an aside before I launch into Canada

While looking up “things to do in Calgary” on google, for my impending journey to Alberta, Dan and I stumbled upon this;

http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/8306

Its the Torrington Alberta Gopher Museum.
If Torrington, had been closer to Calgary it might have redeemed the province.

So so Austin

Friday, April 30th, 2010

So I’m in Jersey, I’ve been to New York all day. Photos will come.

I’m going to go back about 5 weeks in the Fran-O-Matic Time Machine ™ and show you some photos from Austin Tx, and SXSW.

SDC19281
This is the most obvious building in Austin. It’s the State Capital Building.

SDC19332

This is 6th Street. That’s the main street where all the bars and crap. So many venues.

SDC19312

These came from the Comedy Central SXSW party. I kinda got my way fudged in there by Moose. He had people to talk to, none of whom I’d heard of, and BBE were setting up for a show.
These did not taste good, if you were wondering. Well, not good without milk.

SDC19407

On one afternoon, when I had planned to go see The Watson Twins, I got conned into taking BBE to an interview with a Chicago radio station. Afterwards we gatecrashed a house party. This was the waffle van in the yard at the party.

SDC19414

James had a fun time, he made some friends.

Later we went back to the hotel made Pisco Sours, and then got in the lift somewhere.
SDC19419
We tried to get into the lift… we lost Charlie though. I dunno. Its all a bit hazy.

SDC19458

This is 6th St later in the evening. T’Nealle and I had ditched the boys and tried to find a frat party…

I’m starting to wonder about the chronology of this. I don’t think it’s right. Oh well.

SDC19568

On the last day, after the show at the Moose lodge which was awesome, T’Nealle and I went to the University district and went to a nutty toy store.
Basically the reason we went was this:
SDC19572
We wanted to try it so David could live vicariously.

Like any good day; we ended at Taco Bell.

Telethon… The Earthquake part II

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

So after this whole Earthquake thing, Chile decided to have a telethon to raise money to help itself. The telethon was titled “Chile Ayuda a Chile” (Chile help Chile).

Now having grown up on New Zealand telethons, I expect a level of cheesiness and overall celebrities doing stupid things for money. In recent years telethons have been boring and drawn out, with an overall lack of entertainment value.
To my surprise; in Chile, a telethon is an extravaganza of epic proportions and the celebrities are actually… well … famous.

We had finally made it to Machali, driving south was a long journey. It usually is a very quick trip, but the detours due to broken highway were still in place.

The queues were long, and by the time Pauli and I made it to Rancauga it was dark. There were piles of rubble outside every house. A lot of “danger, keep out” tape.

We had a couple of big shakes during that night, and I was thankful that we were in a structurally sound house. The next couple of days were the same. Cristi arrived on Saturday. She arrived in time for the telethon. The show launched at 10pm with a song and dance number which set the tone for the whole event.

Lucia and Pauli prepared snacks and drinks. (Pear-Chocolate pie, and pisco sours)

Michelle Bachelet encouraged her people to raise their flags outside their houses in honour of the dead. So early in the morning we did just that.
The flag

We watched the telethon on and off all day.
As the telethon neared an end, it became apparent that they had exceeded their goal of 30 Million US dollars, and the tally was closer to 60.

We drove to Santiago that night, with people waving flags from motorway overbridges, and every car with slogans written on them. We passed a convoy of trucks delivering supplies to the badly damaged South.

It was amazing. Something that made me feel a level of pride I had never felt in New Zealand.

I’m pretty sure nobody reads this anymore… basically since the rss feed thing changed.

I’m in Chicago. I am still working on writing about the last 6 weeks. Its a big effort.

There is a school group sitting beside me talking in French. I learned a little French in Winnipeg. I had the national anthem of Canada sung to me in French. I attempted some Maori. Embarrassing.

The Earthquake

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

So here isn’t really an entry, its a mish mash of emails sent and altered slightly. I can’t really bring myself to write out a whole rant about it.

I was with my two cousins in their apartment on the 10th floor when the earthquake hit.

It was 3:45 or so in the morning. We had been at a roof top party a few hours earlier. Thankfully, and very abnormally, we came home around midnight. Usually parties get into full swing around that time. We’d been drinking Vodka. That was also when I had decided to re-work drupal, and break this website. Don’t drink and attempt to alter PHP code kids. It’s bad.

The shaking was long, and quite violent. Every time I tried to stand on my feet I was thrown at the wall. The noise was indescribable. The sound of the earth creaking, the building rocking, and the glass and silverware smashing on the floor.

Paulina yelled at me to get up and out of bed, Cristi told me to grab all my belongings of value, and once the shaking stopped. We descended the 10 floors to the car park to wait and see what would happen.

The pool had shed its water, the whole car park was drenched in a 5 metre radius from the pool enclosure. Everyone was huddled in family groups and my cousins desperately tried to use their cellphones. I sat and looked at the stars for a long time. It didn’t occur to me, that why I could see them was because the city; 7 million people, were without power.

After 2 hours, we were greeted by a Caribinero (Police) Officer who told us it was ok to go to the apartments and collect belongings. It would be a while before engineers could come and check the structural stability of the building.

Damage to the apartment building

We went upstairs and watched the sun rise over the Andes.

We tried to clean up the mess in the apartment. After a short, and restless nap, we sat and watched the TV news. We had power, but no running water, or gas.

Earthquake Damage

Since the apartment had no water or gas working afterward, it was proving hard to make anything to eat. So the decision was made to abandoned it. We planned to trek across the city to an uncle’s house, but as we were about to walk out the door, Uncle Manolo rang the doorbell. Manolo’s house which was nearby, had running water. It was also low to the ground, which was a relief in the unsettling time of aftershocks.

There were aftershocks every half hour or so, some big, some very small. It was quite hard to relax. Where we were it seemed that the buildings mostly suffered only surface damage but parts of the city, where the buildings are old have been completely destroyed. We hadn’t really been out to look around as the city (Santiago) was in chaos. My aunt and uncle both work for the government as an engineer and architect, so they were both very busy assessing the damage to buildings and deciding what will be demolished. They live in a city south of Santiago, which was mostly been flattened by the earthquake. We had planned to travel on the Saturday morning to Rancagua, but this event had made it impossible. The road south had been destroyed too.

Tio Nacho and his wife also came to Manolo’s. We sat, listening to a transistor radio, and sleeping when we could. Being able to eat food was a blessing. The problem was the lack of power. The fridge’s food would slowly defrost. So it had to be eaten. Manolo’s skittish cat had taken a liking to me. Its name was translated as “mortal sin”. Those who know me well, know over the years I have had varying degrees of cat allergy. I thought Will’s cat had cured me of it, as I didn’t get any hive like rashes when around her. It seems I’m not cured, just that Will’s cat, and his mums other cats didn’t set it off. Manolo’s cat, did. I was red and itchy and sleepless.
On Sunday morning we were woken early by a massive shake. After we settled down, we went to Nacho’s house for lunch. I fell asleep after eating. I was shattered. I woke late in the evening to watch the news and eat some more. Pauli and Cristi had gone to the apartment and seen the damage again. Deciding we would return to the apartment building in the morning

Iglesia in Providencia

I didn’t really take pictures of the quake damage till almost a week later. I felt like it was a horrible thing to do, so when I did take pictures I attempted to be discrete.
Old buildings had been badly damaged. Most of the CBD was fine though. I went to visit Mireya much later on, and discovered the beautiful Barrio where she lived was in a mess. It is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Santiago. A lot of buildings had extensive internal and external damage. It makes me incredibly sad that the most pretty and historic buildings will have to be destroyed.

Arts and Crafts in Victoria

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

The weather got really crusty in Victoria for the long weekend. In avoidance of going outside we decided to do some stencil t-shirt making.

My goal was clear, after a complete fail at finding an “I Heart Canada” t-shirt I had to make one.

We had scoured all the tourist shops in Victoria, of which there are a lot; and had found none.

So here are the photos of the process of T-shirt stenciling.
