awesome

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

So I have a new job.

I’m listening to the Flaming Lips doing Pink Floyd’s Dark side of the Moon. Its quite cool.

I spent a fair bit of time today also listening to the new Band of Horses, Broken Social Scene and some of The Low Anthem- my SXSW discovery… and uhh…. new Eels, and Michigan by Sufjan Stevens.

This is one of the good things about my new job.

I suggest if you’re after a mellow album to wake up/fall asleep to, Sufjan is the way to go.

Out Of Kilter

Monday, May 24th, 2010

A while ago I did a couple of posts of old photos and wrote a bit about the memories that they conjured up.
I have a few more in hiding to write about at some point, but today I will focus on the mid 00′s and Out Of Kilter.

It was a label/event thing started by one of my best friends in the whole world Will Edmonds.
Its funny, because a lot of the people I admire most, and are some of my closest friends I met because of OOK.

I would go into the depths of it all but you can read that here:
http://www.outofkilter.net/
This morning Will started writing about the history of OOK, and hopefully will keep updating as a result of this important piece of music history in Chch.

stolen from the OOK board~
I wrote an article in 2007 about Will and OOK. Its funny how things have come full circle again and he is still putting on AA shows under Tally Ho!

If you want to read the article go here:

It was published in A Low Hum Magazine way back then.

T’Nealle wrote an awesome post about this too.
They might have been 15, and I was like 22? But its still some of the best memories ever.

so yeah.
Will= Super fucking amazing

Nick, Josh, T’Nealle, Eamonn, Melinda, Matt, Joe, Darian, Charlie, James… man, this list could go forever of the people I met BECAUSE of OOK.

It also makes me sad that Creation closed

I just keep reminding myself I did this for the challenge, because life in Christchurch was just floating along. It seems that London is a challenge for everyone.
I wish it wasn’t so hard.

Anyway, today’s lack of motivation comes from my wearing of my pimp dressing gown and thinking about the fact I’m going to see Janet Jackson tonight, and Eric Idle. Yes, those are tickets to the Graham Norton show I have in front of me.

So Tuesday

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

That’s the ticket. I know I promised ages ago, while holding Will’s birthday present ticket that I would take a photo of me holding mine. So there it is.

Tidying up today. Making things neat, purging rubbish and such so when I do get somewhere to stay next I’ll be ready to roll.

To make myself feel happy today I watch Never mind the buzzcocks. Then put myself on a waiting list for audience tickets. Then did what Simon A told me to do when I felt down for the first time in London.
Drank an L&P.

It made me feel a bit better. Also a little homesick.

I’ll be ok though. I’m always ok in the end. Life sometimes is just a challenge.

sigh, London

So London is great/ London is awful.

The weather is half lovely, half wet and cold.

The job situation is I don’t have one or any income/ plenty of opportunities out there for work and have been applying heaps.

This the city where I know the most people so far/ feel the most alone.

I also now have to find a bed before the week is out, perhaps by Thursday at the latest. Bed is a bit of a loose term. I’ll sleep on floors, couches, air mattresses… beds are the most ideal.

quick update

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Ok, sorry for the lack of updates for the grand total of 4 of you who do read this! Hah.

Anyway, yes, I am in London now. Unfortunately internet access isn’t through my own computer so I haven’t posted any photos of any of the trip in ages.
I will eventually get past Austin. I promise.

This is one from my walk-a-bout in London with Simon on my first weekend.

Canada was amazing and I will share the long story of the month spent there.

I guess you want to know where I’m at in London. Well I have spent nearly 2 weeks at Maria’s. Its been great and her flatmates are lovely. I cooked a roast dinner for them mid way through last week and vacuumed their stairs and hallway today. Hopefully this makes up for the fact that I’m too poor to pay them for staying really.

London is expensive, but I’m over the fact that everything costs too much and am getting used to making a little money go a long way.

I finally saw Pavement. I could almost die happy now.
I see Tegan and Sara are playing in June. I must find a job so I can afford to go. I know tickets aren’t expensive, but spending money on shows and not food/accomodation/transport and other more important things comes first.

A while back Owen mentioned he could die happy if he saw some bands live… when he did this I made a similar list.
My list was Ben Folds, Pavement,The Eels, Tegan and Sara, Cat Power and Mogwai.

There is at least a chance that 2 of these acts will perform in London during my time here.
I missed Ben Folds in Chicago, and although I’m sad I did, I think I’ll still have a chance in the future of seeing him perform.

I guess though, now I can cross Pavement off the list of bands to see.
There are of course acts like Broken Social Scene, Band of Horses, The Shins and such which I have seen, and will happily make an effort to see again.

In New York

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Didn’t go to Times Square today, suggested it to Becca, but I’d already been and she only wanted some cheap I heart NY T-Shirts.
